The Wheeled Vehicle Engines sub course, part of the Light Wheel Vehicle Mechanic MOS 63B Skill Level 3 sub course, is designed to teach the knowledge necessary to understand principles of operation, identify types and components, and perform maintenance and troubleshoot internal combustion engines. Information is provided on spark- and compression-ignition engines, engine inspection, and lubrication and cooling systems.

The sub course is presented in five lessons.

Lesson 1:       Fundamentals of spark-ignition engines
Task: describe the fundamentals of spark-ignition engines.
Conditions: given information about the principles of operation, construction, and classification of sparkignition engines.
Standards: solve 70 percent of the multiple-choice items covering fundamentals of spark-ignition engines.

Lesson 3:      Engine inspection
Task: describe the inspecting, testing, and troubleshooting procedures for engines.

The subcourse is presented in three lessons

Lesson 1:      Introduction to automotive electricity

Conditions: given information on the history and theory of electricity; characteristics of conductors and insulators; current, voltage, and resistance and their relationship; ac and dc; magnetism and induction; electrical symbols and circuits; and common circuit defects.
Standards: answer 70 percent of the multiple-choice items covering introduction to automotive electricity.

Lesson 2:       Automotive batteries
Task: describe the construction, operation, and maintenance of automotive batteries.
Conditions: given information on the construction, operation, and rating of batteries; methods of connection; and maintenance procedures.
Standards: answer 70 percent of the multiple-choice items covering automotive batteries.

Lesson 3:      Fundamentals of electrical test equipment
Task: describe the purpose, construction, and operation of electrical test equipment.
Conditions: given information on voltmeters, ammeters, and ohmmeters; low-voltage circuit testers; multi meters ; and simplified test equipment for internal combustion engines (ste/ice).
Standards: answer 70 percent of the multiple-choice items covering electrical test equipment.

The wheeled vehicle electrical system (part ii) sub course, part of the light wheel vehicle mechanic mos 63b skill level 3 course, is designed to teach the knowledge necessary for performing tasks related to repair of automotive electrical systems. Information is provided on ac and dc generator systems, starting system components, battery ignition systems, and vehicle electrical accessory systems. The sub course is presented in four lessons.

Lesson 1:       Generating systems
Task: describe the principles of ac and dc generators and regulators.
Conditions: given information on the principles, construction, and operation of dc generators, alternators, and charging systems.
Standards: answer 70 percent of the multiple-choice test items covering generating systems.

Lesson 2:       Cranking systems
Task: describe the application of the fundamentals of electricity to starting system components.
Conditions: given information on the principles, operation, and construction of cranking motors and starter drives.

Lesson 3:       Ignition systems

Standards: answer 70 percent of the multiple-choice test items covering ignition systems.

Lesson 4:       Accessory systems
Task: describe the principles of vehicle electrical accessory systems.
Conditions: given information on construction and operation of wiring systems, lighting systems, instruments, and gages.
Standards: answer 70 percent of the multiple-choice test items covering accessory systems.

The wheeled vehicle fuel and exhaust systems sub course, part of the light wheel vehicle mechanic mos 63b skill level 3 course, is designed to teach the knowledge necessary to develop the skills to service and maintain fuel and exhaust systems. This sub course provides information about the fuel and exhaust systems for both spark ignition and compression ignition engines. It also provides information on inspection procedures for these systems. The sub course is presented in three lessons. Each lesson corresponds to a terminal objective as indicated below.

Lesson 1:       Fundamentals of gasoline engine fuel systems
Task: describe the fundamentals of gasoline engine fuel systems.
